Why Donate?

The Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps provides the campus of SUNY Stony Brook with emergency medical service (EMS) coverage. We have in-house crews 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the academic semester. During certain parts of the year we do not have inhouse crews but still have predetermined crews in close proximity to the ambulance. Our ambulances respond to emergency calls as well as campus-wide standbys (i.e. football games, Special Olympics, etc.). It is our mission to provide quality emergency medical training, education, and care in a professional manner to the State of New York at Stony Brook and its surrounding areas.

SBVAC has proven its ability to be the best time and time again. In 2002, the National Collegiate EMS Foundation presented the agency with it's "Striving for Excellence" award at its annual conference. At the same conference, SBVAC brought home the gold for the NCEMSF skills competition. In the same year, Suffolk County EMS chose SBVAC as the recipient of its "Agency of the Year" award. Under the unerring guidance of then-chief Ann Teng, the agency earned one of its highest honors one year later: the "New York State 2003 Agency of the Year".

These awards only serve to show that SBVAC is an agency that is extremely dedicated to its patients, members, and people in the community. Besides providing response times that are half the county average, SBVAC reaches out to educate its local community. Through members who generously donate their time, SBVAC is able to commit to setting up programs to introduce health and EMS awareness in the community. For example, the agency has done "Teddy Bear Clinics" (visiting the on-campus daycare) to familiarize toddlers and young children with ambulances and emergency care. The objective of these clinics is to try to address the fear that toddlers and young children have of being a patient in an ambulance. In addition to that, SBVAC continually provides educational programs (e.g. AHA CPR and First Aid) to local clubs and organizations. We also provide medical standbys for campus events and club events (when requested).

When you donate to SBVAC, you are supporting an ambulance company that often does much with very little. As a collegiate ambulance corp, we are funded a fraction of what other state agencies recieve. However, the agency uses effectively what resources it has. As part of a university that is rapidly expanding in size and development, our agency has done much to keep up with this growth. Your donation will enable the agency to continue serving the community with the highest quality of care possible.
